Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice Cormier Smith Visits Belgium and the United Kingdom

Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice Desirée Cormier Smith will travel to Brussels and Oxford April 9-12.

In Brussels, the Special Representative will attend the launch of the Roma Foundation for Europe’s forthcoming report, which will detail the situation of Roma communities in Ukraine before Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression, the integral involvement of Roma persons in Ukraine’s defense during the war, and how to improve their quality of life going forward.  She will also meet with Europe-based Black civil society leaders and EU officials.

In Oxford, the Special Representative will attend the Skoll Foundation World Forum, where she will participate in a panel on Reshaping Power for a Shared Future, exploring global trends in different types of power – from narrative to political and economic power – and the approaches that civil society and governments are taking to examine, confront, and reimagine current structures of power to foster more just and inclusive societies for all.

The United States is concerned by the marginalization of Roma communities, particularly in Europe.  We remain committed to supporting a more free, fair, and inclusive Europe and advocating for equal rights for Roma individuals as well as for all individuals from marginalized racial or ethnic communities worldwide.
