The United States of America and Australia Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Countering Foreign State Information Manipulation

On August 5, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation between the United States and Australia on countering foreign state information manipulation. The signing ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting between Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Wong in advance of the Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN).

The MOU is the result of increased cooperation between the U.S. and Australian governments to identify and counter foreign state information manipulation. The Memorandum will set the direction for future collaboration to reduce the threat by building resiliency within civil society institutions and information ecosystems against disinformation. By signing the MOU, the United States and Australia advance our common determination to preserve regional and global stability, prosperity, and peace through international cooperation.
